Transpersonal psychology emerged as the fourth significant movement within academic psychology in the late 1960s, following the behavioral, psychoanalytic, and humanistic movements. It is rooted in the teachings of notable psychologists like William James, Carl Jung, Sigmund Freud, Abraham Maslow, and Ken Wilber among others.
This field encapsulates a broad spectrum of disciplines including quantum physics, anthropology, sociology, biology, philosophy, and theology, embracing an eclectic approach towards the insights drawn from behavioral, psychoanalytic, and humanistic psychology.
Carl Jung coined the term "collective unconscious" to refer to the transpersonal unconscious. Abraham Maslow’s exploration of self-actualization was a pivotal contribution to the foundation of transpersonal psychology. Maslow delved into aspects like creativity, altruism, peak experiences, and personal agency transcending conventional personality boundaries, along with the study of psychological trauma and personal growth.
